During a dinner meeting, local entrepreneur, Jim Dykes commented on his newly acquired interest in community foundations. He continued on in some length until one of those present threw $20 into the breadbasket and said, “Here’s some money – just go start one”.

Some time later, Jim, along with Ken Koyama, Publisher of the Packet & Times, and Pat Campbell, Casino Rama, formed a Steering Committee, secured operating funding from the Casino, and hired the Foundation’s first Executive Director, Deborah Wagner. The Foundation was officially launched on January 7, 1999, with a $200,000 gift from Casino Rama establishing the Foundation’s Community Unrestricted Fund. The Casino issued a challenge to the Foundation to match that amount by the end of the year and they would gift another $150,000. The City of Orillia, Georgian College, local groups and organizations, and members of the general public, all came to the table to ensure the challenge was met. At the completion of that deadline, the Foundation had more than $450,000 in endowed assets. Quite an exciting start to the Foundation’s History!
_____________

By the end of 2009, the Community Foundation of Orillia & Area had provided close to $270,000 in grants to a wide range of local charities.

The Community Foundation of Orillia & Area is pleased to offer its services to non-profit organizations. Non-profit organizations may choose to establish a Charitable Endowment Fund or a Managed fund with us. Setting up a fund with us can be cost-effective, reduce administration, and can be an integral part of your sustainability plan.
The day-to-day management and administration, coupled with the need to retain the services of lawyers, fund managers and accountants to administer a charitable endowment can be time consuming and costly for many organizations. Through the Community Foundation, it’s simple. You build the fund, we’ll do the rest!

How to get started
Charities who are registered with Canada Revenue Agency may start a charitable endowment fund with the Community Foundation of Orillia & Area with a minimum contribution of $10,000 over 3 years.

For more information on both Charitable Endowment Funds and Managed Funds, please call 705.259.1163 or email info@communityfoundationorillia.ca.

Benefits
We work with our donors and their families to provide personalized philanthropic plans that are creative, cost-effective and tax-efficient. Through our flexible, comprehensive donor services, we strive to create a thoroughly enjoyable charitable giving experience. All donations, no matter how large or small, make a difference.

John Green is a successful business executive who worked his way up the corporate ladder. For John and his wife, Evelyn, finding ways to help others in their community has been a way of life. For the last several years, they have volunteered in their local Big Brothers and Big Sisters program. They also contribute their time and money to a local organization that helps homeless and disadvantaged people build skills to enter the job market.

During the past year, John’s company grew significantly, and he expects to receive a sizable bonus in late December. As John and Evelyn began their year-end tax planning, their accountant suggested that they consider increasing their charitable contributions this year. He knows that “giving back” is an important piece of the Greens’ lives, and it will help reduce taxes in this year of high income.

John and Evelyn agreed with the advice, but expressed concern about not having much time to consider which community organizations to support with their gift. They also had misgivings about donating a large sum of money to one charity. “If we give it this year, they may expect as much or more in years to come,” John said. The Greens’ accountant encouraged them to consider using their community foundation as a flexible vehicle that will allow them to fulfill their varied charitable interests.

Personalized giving. After meeting with their community foundation’s professional program staff to discuss giving choices, the Greens elected to establish a Donor Advised Fund in the name of their family. This will allow them to stay actively involved in suggesting uses for their fund for years to come, while providing an immediate tax deduction in the year their gift is made. The Greens can recommend distributions from their fund to their favourite charities. They can even involve their son and daughter in the distribution process, actively sharing their community values with their children.

Fostering community. Through their community foundation, John and Evelyn Green found a way to extend their personal commitment to the people in their community, and to act on their charitable interests in a very meaningful way during their lifetimes.

Each year, the Greens will meet with community foundation staff to recommend uses of their fund. They can take advantage of the community foundation’s knowledge of local needs and resources to find the charitable organizations and projects that best match their interests.

For instance, one year they might suggest a grant to the local Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization, which is a cause they have always supported. The next year they may choose to support other organizations suggested by their community foundation that match their interests, such as helping to start an after-school children’s program, or contributing to a career development resource centre for low-income families.

Setting up a fund is simple. We offer different types of Funds to match a donor’s personal, financial and philanthropic goals. We encourage the use of endowment funds as they are permanent and provide for both a lasting legacy and organizational sustainability. However, other, shorter term fund options are available. Please read below for more information.

With a minimum donation of $10,000 over a period of three years, a fund can be established on your behalf, which may be named after yourself, a family or family member, a company or a valued friend. Funds may also be named for a particular community or region in Orillia & area, or for a particular purpose, cause or project.

The following are the most common types of funds for donors to choose from:

Unrestricted Funds. You can use your gift to meet ever-changing community needs – including future needs that often cannot be anticipated at the time your gift is made. We evaluate all aspects of community well-being – arts and culture, education, environment, health and social services, youth, and more. The flexibility of your unrestricted gift makes it possible to respond to the community’s most pressing needs, today and tomorrow.
PDF – Unrestricted Fund

Field of Interest Funds. You can target your gift to address needs in an important area of community life. The arts. AIDS. Aging. At-risk youth. You identify your personal interest area when making your gift; our board awards grants to community groups and programs that are making a difference in the area you select.
PDF – Field of Interest Fund

Designated Funds. You can direct your gift to a specific charity or issue area. Help provide ongoing funding for a senior centre, museum, your church, or virtually any nonprofit charitable organization. You identify the recipient you wish to benefit through your gift; our staff manages the annual distribution of funds.
PDF – Designated Fund

Donor Advised Funds. You can have ongoing involvement in the use of your gift. You work with our professional grantmaking staff, identifying ways to use dollars from your Donor Advised Fund to address the issues and needs you care about most. Your recommendations are submitted to our board for approval; we then distribute grant dollars.
PDF – Donor Advised Fund

Agency Endowment Funds. An attractive option for local charities that currently manage, or are interested in establishing their own endowment fund. An Agency Endowment Fund through your local community foundation makes it easy and efficient to create and manage a permanent endowment for your organization. You build the fund. We take care of the rest.
PDF – Endowment Fund

Scholarship Funds. You can invest in your community’s future and show students you care. Your community foundation provides the expertise to help you meet your personal goals and awards scholarships to deserving students.

By partnering with the Community Foundation of Orillia & Area, professional advisors of many kinds–financial planners, lawyers, accountants, and others–can help their clients fulfill their financial, family and charitable goals.

Here are just a few of the ways we do this:

We work as your partner. You stay in control of your client relationships–we’re here to help you provide a full range of services to your clients;

We are experts on charitable giving. Whether it’s setting up an alternative to a private foundation or putting together a complicated estate plan, we can tailor giving plans to meet your client’s needs;

We are experts about our community, so we can help your clients be as effective as possible in their giving;

We help you connect across generations. When you help families establish an advised fund with us, you and they can stay involved for generations;

We help your clients donate a variety of assets, including cash, appreciated securities, and real estate. These can be assets they give now or later, as part of their estate plans.

You can help make a difference in the lives of your clients. By partnering with us, you may be able to help your clients increase their current income, increase their heirs’ inheritance, create a legacy for the community, and teach their children about philanthropy.

As a public charity, we offer maximum tax benefits. And starting a fund at a community foundation is significantly less expensive and easier than starting and operating a private foundation. For more information, please review our Resource Kit or contact us today.
