About the organization:

I Challenge Diabetes was founded by Chris Jarvis, a former Canadian Olympic rower living with Type 1 diabetes. During his athletic career, Chris recognized a significant lack of understanding and support for those managing diabetes. This inspired him to create I Challenge Diabetes—a charity dedicated to empowering individuals in the diabetes community with the skills, resources, and inspiration to take control of their health and live vibrant, fulfilling lives.

Proposed Project Start Date:
July 6, 2026

Proposed Project End Date:
August 21, 2026

Please briefly describe the project and how the funds will be used:

Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong condition requiring ongoing, complex management, and many children and youth face barriers to safely participating in recreational activities without the right supports. To address this gap, we developed our Diabetes Sports & Adventure Camps—an inclusive program that provides safe access to sport while building essential physical, emotional, and self-management skills. With your support, we will deliver five Diabetes Sports & Adventure Camps in July and August 2026 at Sugar Valley Farms (4055 Line 5 N, Coldwater, ON). These camps will serve approximately 60 children and youth aged 5–17 living with Type 1 diabetes.

How many people will benefit from the project directly and indirectly within the geographic area covered by the CFOA:

The camps will benefit approximately 60 children and youth aged 5–17 living with Type 1 diabetes. We anticipate that a minimum of 12 of these participants will come from the CFOA geographic area. In addition, the camps are expected to have an indirect impact on approximately 114 individuals, including 23 within the CFOA region.

Please describe any in kind contributions/volunteer labour connected to this project:

Volunteers—many of whom are former participants—play a vital role by giving back as mentors, supporting and inspiring the next generation of leaders in the Type 1 diabetes community.

How will success be evaluated?

Success will be evaluated through post-camp surveys that capture both quantitative and qualitative data. Participants will be asked to reflect on changes in self-esteem, confidence, and diabetes self-management skills. Survey results will be complemented by testimonials and photos to provide deeper insight into participant experiences and outcomes. In 2025, this approach demonstrated strong impact, with 98% of participants reporting improved opportunities to learn diabetes management strategies and 75% reporting increased self-esteem after attending.
