About the organization:

The Salvation Army is a Christian organization that gives hope and support to vulnerable people in 400 communities across Canada and 134 countries. The Orillia Salvation Army has an active Emergency Disaster Services Team that supports a Street Outreach Mission for the community. The Street Outreach Teams identify and assess the needs of homeless and at-risk individuals on the streets of Orillia. Our team has more than thirty volunteer members to support this program. We aim to be a transforming influence in our community by restoring hope and dignity to those who are struggling.

Please briefly describe the project and how the funds will be used:

Using The Salvation Army’s Community Response Unit (canteen truck), free dinner, snacks and beverages are offered to any homeless or at-risk persons in the area. We also:
• If needed, offer heat/cold supplies – tents, sleeping bags, etc.
• Assess the needs of homeless/at-risk individuals
• Make referrals to agencies as required
• Offer a meal in a non-threatening, inclusive environment
The funds will be used for food and supplies needed to prepare and serve meals each Friday. The number of those served and food costs have significantly increased.

How many people will benefit from the project directly and indirectly within the geographic area covered by the CFOA:

In 2025, we served 9,853 meals in Orillia, and expect to serve similar or higher numbers in 2026. We serve vulnerable populations in Ontario’s priority groups; Indigenous, individuals experiencing homelessness (chronic, youth, following exits from institutions).

We have a team of more than 30 volunteers that contributed more than 2,000 hours in 2025 for our Street Ministry program. They are divided into four teams that are deployed in a four-week cycle. Using the Salvation Army’s Community Response Unit (canteen truck), six to eight volunteers deploy every Friday between 6-8 pm. Other volunteers are utilized for food preparation. We receive surplus bread donations from Costco and Mariposa Market weekly. We also receive chicken from KFC and pizza from Little Caesar’s twice weekly. These donations significantly offset our weekly food costs.

How will success be evaluated?

Experience has shown that providing a free meal or beverage is a proven method of allowing a comfortable opportunity to communicate and start relationship building. It is the “front door” to a broader system of health, mental health, housing, income support and other essential services. It is the first step towards ending homelessness in Orillia. When we are able to bring relief and hope to those vulnerable and at risk in our community, we are attaining what we have set out to do.
