About the organization:

The John Howard Society of Simcoe & Muskoka is a non-profit organization that provides community-based programs and services to individuals affected by the criminal justice system. Operating in Barrie and Orillia, it focuses on prevention, intervention, and reintegration through supports such as youth programming, court assistance, and community service initiatives. The organization works with diverse populations to build life skills, reduce reoffending, and promote safer communities. Guided by a mission of creating effective, just, and humane responses to crime, it emphasizes advocacy, education, and partnerships to address the root causes of criminal behaviour.

Proposed Project Start Date:
June 1, 2026

Proposed Project End Date:
June 1, 2027

Please briefly describe the project and how the funds will be used:

Provide a free 10-week tabletop roleplaying program for youth (13–18) facing financial and social barriers
Offer safe, structured after-school space with meals and trained mentors
Build social-emotional skills: communication, teamwork, leadership, and critical thinking by utilizing Dungeons and Dragons as a group activity.

How many people will benefit from the project directly and indirectly within the geographic area covered by the CFOA:

Our goal is to meet with 30 youth aged 13-18 over the course of the program.

Please list any partnerships and collaborations for this project:

Gilbert Center.

I do not have support letters, but secondary school will be contacted and provided with a flyer, see attachments below, for spreading word for youth that might be interested.

Please describe any in kind contributions/volunteer labour connected to this project:

Facilitators will be guiding youth through tabletop roleplaying fundamentals, then gradually mentoring them to design and run their own games. This includes coaching in storytelling, conflict resolution, and group facilitation, empowering participants to take on leadership roles. Volunteers and staff will also assist with program setup, outreach, and coordination. Additional in-kind support includes use of organizational space, existing program materials, and administrative resources to manage scheduling, participant intake, and partnerships, ensuring the program remains accessible and sustainable.

How will success be evaluated?

Program evaluation will include pre- and post-program surveys to measure changes in participant well-being. At the start, youth will complete a brief questionnaire assessing baseline levels of anxiety, sadness, and overall mood. At the end of the 10 weeks, the same measures will be used to identify changes over time. Post-program surveys will also include questions about whether participants found the experience relaxing, meaningful, and socially engaging. Comparing responses will help determine the program’s impact on emotional well-being, sense of connection, and overall participant experience, informing future program improvements.
