Please briefly describe the project and how the funds will be used:

Starlight Canada’s latest addition for mental health in hospitalized children puts therapeutic gaming in the palm of their hands. The Starlight Handheld is a portable gaming device that encourages play, reduces stress, and empowers kids. 83% of our hospital partners disclosed that they lack the resources to sufficiently meet the mental health needs of their pediatric patients. One of these hospitals is Soldiers Memorial Hospital in your community. This year, they are wishing for one Starlight Handheld to meet their mental health needs. With your support, we are hoping to place a unit in hospital to make their wish fully come true.

How many people will benefit from the project directly and indirectly within the geographic area covered by the CFOA:

The Starlight Handhelds program will directly benefit pediatric patients in the Orillia community admitted to Soldiers Memorial Hospital. A single Starlight Handheld unit is expected to reach more than 2,190 patients a year!

How will success be evaluated?

The success of this program is monitored and evaluated through an end-of-the-year survey detailing the impact of the Starlight Handheld units. In this survey, we gather information regarding desire of use, duration of engagement, effect on behaviour and mental health, along with other factors. Through this survey, we also receive feedback regarding areas of improvement so that we are better able to meet the needs of pediatric patients.
